How to Reduce Joint and Muscle Pain

Joint and Muscle Pain

If you suffer from joint and muscle pain then you know that at some point pain relievers just won’t cut it for pain relief. While treatment does vary by individual, there are multiple ways to address it. Below is a collection of tips and tricks that you can try to help alleviate your joint and muscle pain easily and effectively. Just be sure to consult a physician before you begin any new pain relief treatment methods.

Ice Packs

One of the best methods to relieve muscle and joint pain is to treat it with ice. The pack can be hard or pliable and you want to be sure to wrap it in a paper towel or washcloth before applying it to the affected area. Placing an icepack directly on the skin can actually cause damage. Hold the ice pack in place for about 15 minutes. The cold from the ice will reduce your pain and swelling.

Heat Treatment

Joint pain and muscle stiffness can be so bad that you can’t push yourself up to get out of bed in the morning. It may even swell to the point where your sciatic nerve becomes pinched. To resolve this, you can use an electric blanket or even a moist heating pad. This is especially effective during the nighttime hours. It gives your body a chance to heal for a longer period versus during the day when you may have a fuller schedule and more interruptions or obligations.

Shedding the Pounds

A large contributor to joint and muscle pain is, unfortunately, excess body weight. Losing the extra pounds will not only help your body feel lighter, but it will also make you healthier too. Not only will it protect your joints from future damage but it will also improve your overall mobility as well.

Exercise is Important

low impact exercise

When you are more active your joints actually increase in flexibility. Avoid running and walking which can cause damage to your joints and instead try low-impact exercises. These can range anywhere from water aerobics to Tai Chi, to swimming to name a few. Almost all exercises ease discomfort and lower stress levels.

Adding in the Right Foods

Did you know that consuming omega-three fatty acids actually help alleviate the pain associated with arthritis? Maybe you aren’t much into cooking. If this is the case, you can supplement your omega-three foods with a fish oil supplement. It may not taste the best but it is convenient on those busy nights when cooking a proper meal just isn’t an option.

Adding the spice turmeric to your food and even beverages can also help reduce inflammation and joint pain. It is a natural anti-inflammatory that has its origins in India. It can also naturally lower blood sugar as well.

If you happen to suffer from other medical conditions, you may wish to consult with a physician before attempting to introduce any new foods or herbal supplements into your daily diet. Certain medicines and herbs don’t mix well and can actually cause negative interactions.

The Benefits of Massage

Another excellent way to reduce muscle and joint pain is to get a massage. A simple massage can increase mobility and leave you feeling as if you’ve just experienced a good night’s sleep! Your energy levels will improve and your joint stiffness will decrease leaving you ready to begin (or end) your day on a good note.

Stress and Joint Pain

Stress can amplify your joint pain quickly and easily. Stress causes your body to release certain chemicals that weaken your immune system. When your immune system is not as strong as it normally is, inflammation can set in. This can be caused by a variety of things. The death of a loved one, an abusive relationship, an unstable job or unhappy home life are all things that can cause stress.

To combat the effects of stress, you can take a long walk or carve out time for yourself. Try to engage in a quiet activity. Work on breathing exercises. Go see a movie at your local movie theater. Music is also a wonderful form of therapy. Although the best medicine is to spend time with someone who makes you laugh. Being able to laugh allows the body to break away from negative stress and allows it to heal properly.

Overall, there are many different ways to address muscle and joint stiffness. You just have to find what works best for you.
