Working out isn’t always easy, but the end result is worth it. It can be easy to find reasons to skip your workout, especially if you’re just getting started and you haven’t really gotten into a groove yet. This can be a real problem when you’re trying to exercise outdoors during the winter.

Temperatures can fluctuate a great deal and sometimes it’s so cold that you don’t want to venture outside at all, much less spend any time out there. The good news is that you don’t have to let the cold weather stop you. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with cold temperatures and stay on track when it comes to getting fit.

Create Layers

The best way to make sure you don’t let the weather get one over on you is to dress in layers. You want just enough clothing to make sure you stay warm, but you don’t want too many pieces to make you feel overly hot at the end of your workout. It’s all about choosing the right number of layers, choosing clothing that fits you properly, and working out with clothing made from quality materials.

How Many Layers Should You Have?

Ideally, it’s a good idea to start by wearing at least three layers. If you’re exercising on mornings that are below zero, you might want to add one or two more, but you certainly don’t want so many that you’re left wondering what to do with it all once you warm up. If you have three, you can easily remove the top piece and tie it around your waist. This allows you to continue your workout without having to stop or lose your momentum.

Choosing Clothes That Fit

It might seem fashionable to choose clothes that are skin tight, but that won’t work when you are wearing multiple layers. Choosing a tank top or a t-shirt that fits snugly is just fine, but when you’re layering, you have to leave room for movement. That means that the shirt you wear over that tank top and the jacket should both have a little wriggle room.

The Right Material

For the bottom layer, you want something that moves with you and wicks moisture away from your body. If you’re not into the newest type of exercise clothing, choosing something that’s made from nylon/spandex blend will be just fine. This is a breathable material that doesn’t trap moisture next to your skin, and it gives you the opportunity to sweat without holding onto moisture. Cotton is a breathable fabric and great for a non-active summer day, but it holds moisture next to your skin, so it isn’t your best bet when working out.

In the end, layering for a winter workout doesn’t have to be difficult. All you really need to do is create an adequate number of layers out of the proper material and then continue on with your workout. Remember, a good base-layer shirt made from wicking fabric along with a long sleeve shirt and a jacket can help you stay on track during those cold winter days.

If you become too warm during your workout, all you need to do is remove your outermost layer (usually a jacket), tie it around your waist, and continue on. Before you know it, you’ll find that you’re doing just as well on the coldest of winter days as you do any other time of year. Once you realize how easy it is, you’ll no longer find it daunting to exercise outside on a cold, wintery day.
